Hazard classification is the process of evaluating the full range of available scientific evidence to determine if a chemical is hazardous, as well as to identify the level of severity of the hazardous effect. When complete, the evaluation identifies the hazard class(es) and associated hazard category of the chemical. Hazardous materials can be broken down into nine hazard classes. Defined in 49 CFR 172.101 and 172, they include explosives, gases, flammable and combustible liquids, flammable solids, oxidizing substances, organic peroxides, toxic substances and infectious substances, radioactive materials, corrosives and miscellaneous hazardous materials. BY GRAPHIC PRODUCTS STAFF. The Hazardous Materials Identification System (HMIS) is a hazard rating system that uses color bar labels to identify and provide information about chemical hazards. It was developed by, and is proprietary to the National Paint Coatings Association (NPCA), now known as the American Coatings Association (ACA). They are defined by the hazardous materials classification (Class 3) as “liquids, mixtures of liquids or liquids containing solids in solution or suspension which give off a flammable vapor, and have a flash point at temperatures not more than 60.5°C or 141°F.” Flammable liquids are capable of posing serious threats because of their volatility, potential of causing severe conflagrations and combustibility. Classification of Hazardous Materials: The DOT has broad authority to regulate hazardous materials that are in transport, including the discretion to determine which materials shall be classified as “hazardous”. These materials are placed in one of nine categories, based on their chemical and physical properties. The Globally Harmonized System (GHS) is an internationally adopted system for the classification and labeling of hazardous chemicals that: Includes established criteria for classifying hazards and for further categorizing (or rating) the hazards according to their relative risks Hazardous Materials Classification; There are multiple sources for identifying the DOT/IATA defined hazards of a material: Shipping papers; Safety Data Sheets (SDS) Container labels and markings. It is also a good practice to search through the hazardous materials table listed in our references section. The HMIS label consists of a five part rectangle: 1) Chemical Identification 2) Chronic Health Hazard Indicator and Acute Health Hazard Rating 3) Flammability Rating New: Visit the Hazardous Substance Assessment page to see classification information for select chemicals. The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is Canada's national hazard communication standard. The key elements of the system are hazard classification, cautionary labelling of containers, the provision of (material) safety data sheets ((M)SDSs) and worker education and
